How do Fast Withdrawals work?

Optimistic rollups today are slowed by a mandatory multi-day challenge window, designed to give validators time to catch and flag fraudulent transactions via fraud proofs. While essential to rollup security, this process extends the time it takes for users and dApps to reach finality, resulting in today’s lengthy, status quo seven-day waiting period.

Arbitrum’s Fast Withdrawal feature addresses these delays by introducing a new transaction finality mechanism for Orbit chains. Here, transactions are verified by a validator committee, and all transactions that reach consensus among the members of the committee are confirmed immediately, bypassing the traditional challenge period and enabling rapid finality. This novel approach enables:

• Configurable withdrawal intervals, allowing for periods as short as 15 minutes.

• Quicker confirmation of withdrawals on the parent chain, with intervals as short as 15 minutes.

• Faster access to finalized states for cross-chain dApps, aligned with the chosen withdrawal frequency.
